Otamus is an “experience park” maintained by the Häijää School District Residents’ Association, located in Salmi, Sastamala.
At Otamus, you’ll find a summer café, a lean-to shelter and barbecue spots, guest docks, a boat launch, a rocky swimming area with piers, spring water, 27 information boards about nature and history, an info point, and nature trails in scenic surroundings. Kayaks, canoes, and SUP boards are also available for rent. Otamus offers excellent opportunities for paddling—either via Lake Tupurlanjärvi to the Saikkalanjoki River or in the other direction toward Siuro and Lake Kulovesi, all the way to the southern part of Vammala. The Saikkalanjoki River has a gentle current and can be paddled in both directions.
The shores of the river Otamus, Lake Piikkilänjärvi, and Lake Tupurlanjärvi have been designated as nationally valuable cultural landscapes. The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, with permanent settlement established around the 13th–15th centuries. Otamus was once known as an “Eräportti” (Wilderness Gate), through which residents of the Kokemäenjoki River valley traveled to their hunting and fishing grounds.
Otamus was also part of a waterway used for boat traffic from Mätikkö via river Saikkalanjoki and Lake Tupurlanjärvi to Lake Kulovesi and onward to Siuro railway station until 1925, when regular boat traffic ended as buses became common.
