As early as the 1680s, the people of Keikyä had a small chapel, which was dismantled and its materials reused for a larger church completed in 1830. In the early 1900s, history repeated itself: the congregation once again found its preaching house too modest. It was replaced, and its materials were used for Keikyä’s third church building, completed in 1912 and designed by the renowned and prolific church architect Josef Stenbäck.
During a major renovation in 1997, the interior of the wooden Art Nouveau church was restored to reflect Stenbäck’s original style. The altarpiece, Old Simeon with the Infant Jesus (1753), has traveled from church to church in Keikyä and is now displayed in the current building.
Stenbäck designed a total of 35 churches; among his most famous works is the Juselius Mausoleum in Pori.
